Jean-Michel Basquiat was an American artist who began as a graffiti artist in New York City in the late 1970s and evolved into a Neo-expressionist painter during the 1980s. At the young age of 23, Basquiat garnered a lot of fame and economic success, selling his paintings for hundreds of thousands of dollars. His close friendship and association with artist Andy Warhol helped assert his position within the art world. Unfortunately, during this successful period the artist was battling a heroin addiction and depression that was quickly growing more severe. Basquiat died at age 27 on August 12, 1988, of a heroin overdose.
