Andrew Wyeth was a visual artist, primarily a realist painter, working in a regionalist style. He was one of the best-known U.S. artists of the middle 20th century. In 1963 he was the first painter to receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Wyeth's favorite subjects were the land and people around him, both in his hometown and his summer home. One of the most well-known images in 20th-century American art is his painting "Christina's World", painted at his Maine summer home, currently in MoMA's collection. Yet Wyeth's art has long been controversial, and critics, curators and historians have offered conflicting views about the importance of his work.
