Studies at the Rotterdam Academy of Fine Arts & Letters in Rotterdam, Holland. 
 
1926 
Immigrates to the United States at age 22. Lives in New York and supports himself as a house painter 
and commercial artist. 
 
1934 
Joins the Artist's Union, New York. 
 
1935 
Joins the mural and easel divisions of the W.P.A. Federal Art Project, where he becomes acquainted with 
Stuart Davis, John Graham, and Arshile Gorky. 
 
1936 
Devotes himself full-time to a career as an artist. De Kooning's work is represented in New Horizons in 
American Art, Museum of Modern Art New York, NY. 
 
1938 
Starts his first series of Women, which becomes a major recurrent theme. 
 
1939 
Shares a studio with Arshile Gorky. 
 
1940s 
Participates in group shows with Gorky and other artists who would form the New York School and 
become known as abstract expressionists. He distinguishes himself by his ability to move between 
figurative and abstract modes. 
 
1948 
First solo exhibition of de Kooning's black-and-white abstractions held at the Egan Gallery in New York. 
Establishes de Kooning’s reputation as a major artist. 
 
1950 
Work is exhibited at the Venice Biennale, Venice, Italy. 
 
1958 
Included in the major exhibition The New American Painting, organized by the Museum of Modern Art, 
New York. Exhibition traveles to eight European countries.

Becomes a citizen of the United States.

Moves from New York City to Springs, Long Island.

While visiting Rome, de Kooning executes his first sculpture.

The Walker Art Center, Minneapolis organizes a show of de Kooning's drawings and sculpture that 
travels throughout the United States. 
 
1975 
Begins a new series of dense, richly colored abstractions. Awarded the Gold Medal from the American 
Academy of Arts and Letters, New York, NY. 
 
1976–77 
The traveling exhibition Willem de Kooning: Painting and Sculpture, was organized by the Smithsonian 
Institution, Washington, D.C. 
 
1978 
Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York mounts a solo exhibition of de Kooning's recent work. 
 
1979 
De Kooning receives the Andrew W. Mellon Prize, which is accompanied by an exhibition at the Museum 
of Art, Carnegie Institute, Pittsburgh, PA. 
 
1982 
Elected to the Akademie der Künste Berlin, Germany. 
 
1985 

Receives the National Medal of Arts from U.S. President Ronald Reagan, Washington, DC. 
 
1997 
Dies on March 19, in Springs, NY. De Kooning is honored with a retrospective at the Museum of Modern
